The New Crown's of Israel debuted Saturday June 23rd, inspired by a group that was popular in the region in the 1950's and 60's. - Contents below extracted in part from the original article written by Dan Kelly, Reading Eagle, June 24, 2007.
Saturday night, in the sanctuary of the St. John Missionary Baptist Church, the New Crowns of Israel made their singing debut as several of the original members offered their support.
The original Crowns of Israel (a gospel singing group that was popular in Reading and the region during the 1950's and early 1960's) biggest claim to fame was founding member Bobby Newton, who remains active in the music industry. Newton went on to perform with James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, Patti LaBelle and other popular gospel and R&B singers.
Bobby Newton and fellow founding member Robert L. Gooch were present for the debut of the New Crowns. Bobby led some of the old members of the Crowns of Israel in song Saturday night as part of the evenings event.
